Gothic is a style of medieval art that was born in Paris and dominated Western Europe in the 13th - 14th centuries. Gradually replacing Romanesque style, Gothic brings into fashion everything bodyless and high, with elongated proportions.
Feature elements of this style are columns, complex shapes of vaults, and tracery ornaments. The improvement of building structures made it possible to relieve walls of the load and introduce huge elongated windows with stained-glass windows into an interior. It was the colored stained-glass windows in the form of lancet arches that became one of the most recognizable features of Gothic style. Thanks to them, the entire interior space of premises was saturated with light, painted in various colors.
Despite the medieval gloominess and mystery, Gothic style is distinguished by grandeur and grace. Walls are lined with wood or decorated with paintings of bright colors, wall tapestries. Paintings were practically not used as decoration. Above the entrance, as a rule, there was a huge stained glass rose window.
Typical furniture of Gothic style were tall double-leaf cabinets, sideboards with high legs, high backs of chairs and beds, imitating the architectural details of castles and churches.
Tables in a Gothic interior had deep drawers and a strongly protruding tabletop, the base of which was two end supports. Under the folding tabletop there were many compartments and small drawers. Beds were built into a wall, or had a classic frame, with a canopy as its unfailing part.
One of the main types of furniture were chests of various types of wood, decorated with figured stucco and metal inserts. Sometimes chests served as tables, benches and even beds. They were often placed one on top of the other, while the entire structure was decorated with lancet vaults - that’s how a cabinet was created.
It is difficult to recreate the atmosphere of a castle interior in a modern apartment, but it is quite possible. Muted and soft colors help create the effect of antiquity: dark red, cherry, blue and green. For wall decoration, you can use wallpaper with a featured pattern. To give a room a pronounced height, part of a wall pattern can be continued to a ceiling. Imitations of engravings depicting medieval fights, as well as souvenir swords and knightly paraphernalia will be an original decor choice.
You should cover the dark wood floor with lint-free carpets. Gothic furniture is massive, for example, made of oak, decorated with floral ornaments.
One of the symbols of Gothic style is the source of fire and heat, which was represented usually by a richly decorated fireplace. If there is no possibility to organize a real fireplace, you can limit yourself to a drywall construction that imitates it. In a bedroom, you can place a wide bed with a canopy, a chest of drawers with a mirror and heavy bedside tables. Lighting in such an interior should be subdued and warm.
As a result, you get the medieval era image, that will give the impression of a modern and stylish interior.
